2022 Kia Sportage

There are many quite capable compact SUVs, but the Kia Sportage surprises with quiet competence and just a dash of premium-ness. With a great infotainment system, and sufficient interior space for people and their stuff, the Sportage is well worth consideration.

The compact SUV segment is the most cutthroat in the car business. How does the Kia Sportage fit into all this madness? By doing nearly everything quite well. Nothing leaps out at you when you drive it. There are no eye-popping 10/10 scores. But the Sportage delivers lots of solid numbers that provide reassurance when you’re behind the wheel. About the only real negatives are its thirsty powertrain and styling that’s a bit dated — it was last redesigned for the 2017 model year.

There are many alternatives to consider. You have a choice of the class-leading excellence of the Honda CR-V, upscale interior of the Toyota RAV4, small-but-fun Mazda CX-5, powertrain choices galore of the Ford Escape, aggressively styled Hyundai Tucson, standard all-wheel-drive Subaru Forester, generously appointed Nissan Rogue, off-road charm of the Jeep Cherokee, roomy-but-plasticky Chevrolet Equinox, large-for-its-class Volkswagen Tiguan, and the just updated 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander.

What's New for 2022

There are only minor changes in features and options for the 2022 Kia Sportage, one of which is a Nightfall model that replaces the previous "S" trim.
